JERUSALEM, March 8 (Xinhua) -- A note written by Albert Einstein in 1921 to a young Italian female scientist was sold for 6,100 U.S. dollars at an auction in Jerusalem.

The note was written to Elisabetta Piccini, a 22-year-old chemistry student who had declined to meet the renowned Nobel-winning physicist.

"Einstein was very interested in meeting her. But Ms Piccini was too shy to meet with such a famous person," said Winner's Auctions & Exhibitions in Jerusalem.

In the letter written in Einstein's native German, he used an idiom implying his affection.

"To the scientific researcher, at whose feet I slept and sat for two full days, as a friendly souvenir," reads the note, which was signed and dated October 1921.

The note was sold alongside a number of other letters from Einstein, including a 1928 note in which Einstein set out his thoughts for his "Third Stage of the Theory of Relativity" that was auctioned off for 103,000 dollars.
