CARACAS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday tweeted thanks to foreign leaders who condemned Saturday's assassination attempt against him during a military speech.

"I am grateful to those countries and world governments who have denounced the attempt against my life. Venezuela will continue following the path of independent and socialist democracy," Maduro wrote on his Twitter account.

Also on Twitter, Bolivian President Evo Morales condemned the attempt and called it a crime against humanity.

"We energetically disavow this new aggression and cowardly attack against our brother, President Nicolas Maduro and the Bolivarian people. After the failure in its intent to democratically, economically, politically and militarily oust him, they make an attempt against his life," Morales wrote.

Russian foreign ministry said in a statement that the use of terrorism in politics is "unacceptable."

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, Cuba's ex-president Raul Castro and current President Miguel Diaz-Canel also condemned the act.

On Saturday, during a speech commemorating the 81 anniversary of Venezuelan National Guard, several drones approached the presidential stand and detonated explosives, which, according to Venezuelan government officials, was an attempt to assassinate Maduro.
