JINAN, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Over 100 red-necked phalaropus were recently spotted and photographed by shutterbugs in a wetland park in east China's Shandong Province, the local forestry department said Friday.

The red-necked phalaropus, a kind of oceanic bird, are migratory. They migrate through the eastern coastal provinces of China in spring and autumn. Most of the time, the species occurs as a single bird or in small flocks.

Therefore, it is rare to see over 100 red-necked phalaropus at the same time. This time, the birds stopped at the Nanhai New Area Wetland Park in the coastal city of Weihai for a rest before continuing their migration.

Staff with the local forestry department said the species were continuously spotted in the wetland park in recent years, indicating the good ecosystem there.

The local government has strengthened environmental protection and raised local residents' ecological consciousness.

The wetland park has also attracted over 300 species of birds, including some national first and second-class protected birds, as well as some endangered and extremely endangered birds, according to the department.
